Qualifications
Active Member. Meet one of the following criteria:
- Possess a valid license as a Public Accountant or Certified Public Accountant
- Be accredited in accountancy or taxation by the Accreditation Council for Accountancy & Taxation (ACAT)
- Be enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service
- Be registered by the California Tax Education Council (CTEC)
- Possess an associate, baccalaureate or higher degree with a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting.
- Have three years of bookkeeping experience
- Meet existing requirements for Active Membership in the National Society of Accountants (NSA)
- Be a Life Member (designated by a vote of 3/4 of the Board of Directors)
Associate Member. Meet one of the following criteria:
- Be an employee of an accounting or tax practitioner firm
- Be an employee of a government, financial institution, private sector business or nonprofit entity, with primary duties in the field of accountancy or taxation for no fewer than three years
- Be an instructor or teacher of accounting at an accredited college, university or business school
- Be an Honorary Member (designated by a vote of 3/4 of the Board of Directors
- Be an out-of-state member (a person who does not reside in the state of California)
Retired Member.
- Be a person who has retired from practice but otherwise meets the requirements of Active Membership, except for continuing education
Student Member.
- Be a student pursuing a course of study in accounting, business adminstration or related subjects at an accredited post-secondary school
Charter Member.
- Be an individual who became a member during the society's inception period of November 1, 1985 to September 1, 1986 and has maintained uninterrupted membership
